Qualifications
Applicants seeking licensure as a Licensed Professional Geologists in Nebraska by reciprocity must:
- Hold a bachelor's or advanced degree in geology or geologic specialty;
- Have a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours or forty-five (45) quarter hours of coursework in geology, including at least five of the following seven courses or their equivalents:
- Field Geology
- Physical Geology
- Mineralogy
- Petrology/Petrography
- Structural Geology
- Stratigraphy/Sedimentology/Soils
- Hydrogeology
- Have passed both the FG and PG exams;
- Have four references, at least two from licensed professional or qualified geologists, who are willing to attest to your character and qualifications; and
- Have five years of progressive experience obtained subsequent to the completion of the education requirements.
OR - Been licensed in good standing for at least fifteen (15) years in another jurisdiction recognized by the Board. Applicants by licensed experience may not be required to meet the education or examination requirements, and
- Have four references from professional geologists.
Application Process
To apply for licensure in Nebraska, an applicant must:
- Complete and submit the Application for Licensure as a Professional Geologist along with the application fee.
- Request a copy of your official transcripts be sent directly to the Nebraska board from the institution(s), or its authorized agent(s), from which your geology degree was earned. Electronic copies may be sent to the Board at nebog.board@nebraska.gov – If the education requirement has not been met, verification that you have been continuously licensed in good standing for a minimum of fifteen (15) years and fifteen (15) years of licensed geologic experience is required.
- Have four reference forms submitted directly to the Nebraska board. Two must be from professional or qualified geologists. If applying by experience, all references must be from professional geologists.
- Have verification of current licensure in good standing submitted directly to the Nebraska board.
- Have verification of passage of the FG and PG exams – If the exams were not taken, verification that you have been continuously licensed in good standing for a minimum of fifteen (15) years and fifteen (15) years of licensed geologic experience is required.
Once all information and documentation have been received, your application will be reviewed by the Board for its review and action at its next regularly scheduled meeting. Once approved, you will be issued a license to practice geology in this state.
Note: Licenses issued before October 1st expire on December 31st of the year of issuance. Licenses issued October 1st or after, will expire the following year. Your application fee does not include your first year’s renewal fee.
