Licensure in an Exempt Field

EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 3, 2025

Qualifications

Applicants who are currently working in an exempt field as listed in Neb. Rev. Stat. §81-3541 and seeking licensure in Nebraska must:

  • Have completed a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours or forty-five (45) quarter hours of coursework in geology, regardless of whether a geology or geologic specialty degree was earned, including at least five of the following courses or their equivalents:
    • Field Geology
    • Physical Geology
    • Mineralogy
    • Petrology/Petrography
    • Structural Geology
    • Stratigraphy/Sedimentology/Soils
    • Hydrogeology
  • Have four references from individuals who have knowledge of your experience and are willing to attest to your character and qualifications. Two must be from professional or qualified geologists; and
  • Have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience acceptable to the Board.

Once all information and documentation have been received, your application will be reviewed by the Board for its action at its next regularly scheduled meeting. If approved, your license will be issued.

Note: Licenses issued before October 1st expire on December 31st of the year of issuance. Licenses issued on October 1st or after will expire the following year. Your application fee does not include your first year’s renewal fee.
